Sexuality Values: Myths, Biases, and Policy
Share
This is an in-person training and attendees will earn 6 CE contact hours.
This workshop is designed as a train-the-trainer course. It is important for staff who train any sexuality material to be properly trained themselves. Myths, unconscious biases, and deep-set values can be transmitted through service and unintentionally affect people receiving services. This violates their rights.
In this workshop, we will explore techniques that will help staff support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) without imparting their own values, views, or biases. This allows them to better support people with I/DD to develop healthy and functional expressions of their sexuality from a sex-positive viewpoint, which aligns with YAI’s Sexuality Policy. The YAI Sexuality Policy states: “Sexuality is integral to the total way in which people relate to their world. Everyone has the need to love and be loved.” This is a foundational training to help staff become aware of and maintain the sexual rights of the people they support.
