Share
Trainer: Consuelo Senior
This is a virtual training and attendees will earn 3 CE contact hours.
People with I/DD and autism are transitioning more and more into the workforce. Despite that positive trend, statistically, many lose or have challenges keeping jobs due to issues of a social-sexual nature. This training will explore why this is happening. Attendees will learn concrete and practical techniques to begin addressing these issues. Attendees will engage in hands-on interactive work that will equip them to develop and run effective groups and provide better support.
Over the course of this training, participants will learn how to:
- Identify their own underlying assumptions and biases around the topic of sex.
- Evaluate and discuss the effect of history on the social-sexual behavior of people with I/DD.
- Explain how sexual rights are human rights.
- Describe the emotional, physical, behavioral, and psychological effects of the suppression/denial of opportunities for the person with I/DD to explore or even express their sexuality.
- Provide support for the emotions and behaviors related to social/sexual issues in a work environment.
- Understand the social-sexual characteristics of people with I/DD at all cognitive levels.
- Define the following and their differences: sex, love, relationship, intimacy.
- Demonstrate an understanding of family members' underlying issues surrounding sex and intimacy.
- Demonstrate the ALLISIT model.
- Concretely teach techniques to prevent sexual harassment.
- Develop curriculum to teach social-sexual etiquette in the workplace.
- Utilize training materials in professional group work to teach unwritten social rules.
- Explore different scenarios through a sex-positive lens.
- Use fun and creative activities to support people with I/DD in a pre-voc work setting.
- Demonstrate an ability to listen to understand, not to respond.
- Demonstrate the skills learned through role plays, small group discussions, and projects.
