Supporting People With I/DD in Developing Healthy Relationships: Friendship, Dating, and Intimacy
Share
Trainer: Consuelo Senior
This is a virtual training and attendees will earn 5 CE contact hours.
Most people with developmental disabilities now live in the community and partake in community resources and activities. Many hold jobs in competitive employment and all, even those people with the most impaired abilities, have a greater array of options from which they may choose. Although these gains are significant and have greatly impacted many aspects of their lives, for the vast majority of people with developmental disabilities, there remains a major area of deprivation and inequality: a lack of opportunity, choice, and the inherent right to develop and participate in social relationships from friendship up through sexual expression.
This session will explore specific soft skills needed to achieve the basic human need of acceptance by someone you like. Attendees will learn how to teach people skills to be a good friend, help people identify what type of friend they like/want, explore types of intimacy (not including sex), strategies to build social capital, concrete activities to develop and nurture positive body image and self-esteem, dating skills, and how to handle rejection.
