Routines are important to Jimmy Else, who lives in YAI’s Ames South Residence.
“Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, at 5 p.m., Jimmy skypes with his father and step-mother in Florida,” said Marlee Becker, a Morning Direct Support Professional at the home.
Jimmy’s father James said he has been using Skype, which allows people to make and receive free voice and video calls online for free, with his 31-year-old son for more than six months.
“It is always a treat to skype with Jimmy,” James said. “Being able see and talk to him makes us feel much closer and connected to him and his daily routines.”
This #GivingTuesday on Nov. 29, you can help YAI get connected. YAI is raising funds to provide wi-fi access to the people we support in our residences and day programs and purchase tablets for those who could benefit from them.
Jimmy looks forward to skyping. “It’s a time for them to talk about anything, any challenges, upcoming trips or anything going on at the house,” Marlee said. “They’ll also tell jokes and do little skits.”
“We discuss movies, of course along with daily activities like his day program, what's for dinner, as well as a plethora of knock-knock jokes," James said. "Skype really is a wonderful tool.”
Many of the 10 people who live at Ames South do not use words to communicate. Technology and apps such as Proloquo could open up their world in a variety of ways.
