Students from YAI's affiliate, iHOPE, shined while showing off their athletic abilities and competed in a series of eight adaptive games at the school's newly minted “iHOPE Games” that took place last week from August 7 to 9.
The festivities kicked off on August 7 with an opening ceremony featuring a performance by the West Point Band. Special guest, Alex Karowski, a former U.S. Olympic rower, was also part of the celebrations.
In addition, the school held its Equipment Expo on the first day. Vendors such as Rifton, Freedom Concepts, PRC-Saltillo, and Friendly Shoes were present. Highlights included displays from the school’s adaptive closet, assistive technology program, feeding program, and positioning clinic.
Basketball, soccer, bowling, 10-foot dash, a relay race, and darts were some of the games students participated in using their adaptive technology.
“Each event was carefully adapted to promote inclusion, ensuring that all students can participate and enjoy the games,” said Cristina Belarmino, iHOPE’s Director of Physical Therapy. “The diverse range of activities highlighted the talents and abilities of every student, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and teamwork.”
The event concluded with words from YAI’s CEO Kevin Carey, followed by a gold medal distribution where every student was recognized for their efforts. The excitement peaked as the Blue team proudly took home the trophy, earning the highest points in this year's Games.
“This event was all about inclusivity, and it wouldn't have been possible without the support of our staff,” said Belarmino. “Their dedication and creativity in adapting each event ensured that every student could participate and shine. Seeing every student participate, try their best, and cheer each other on was truly inspiring.”
