After more than four decades of friendship, Joan Emmerich and Elaine O’Hara – known affectionately as Joanie and Birdie – proved that true bonds stand the test of time and distance. Once housemates and longtime roommates at the Mamaroneck IRA in Hudson Valley, the two recently reunited for a lunch date after being apart for five months.

Thanks to the thoughtful efforts of two dedicated Direct Suppport Professionals (DSPs), Rhina Peña and Cathy Maldonado, the duo’s special reunion took place at Cornetta’s Seafood Restaurant & Marina in Rockland County on March 23, where the friends enjoyed a beautiful afternoon of laughter, conversation, and delicious food by the water.

“Joan and Elaine shared over 20 years of friendship at Mamaroneck, and I was determined to help them stay connected after Joan moved to Helen Court,” said Peña. “We planned a meet-up at Cornetta’s, where they relaxed, caught up, and truly enjoyed each other’s company. They’re already excited for their next visit.”

Their story started in March 1981, when both women moved into the Mamaroneck residence shortly after its opening. In October 2024, Emmerich moved to a barrier-free home in Rockland County for safety reasons.

"When Joan and Elaine reunited, Elaine was thrilled, and Joan was over-the-moon excited to share all about her day," said Maldonado. "Seeing the pure joy of their unbreakable friendship meant the world to me."

For Emmerich and O’Hara, the lunch was more than just a meal—it was a celebration of 44 years of sisterhood. And while their day ended with lunch, both made it clear to staff that this won’t be the last time they get together.

“I had a good time with Joanie, and I miss her,” said O’Hara. “I hope to see her again soon.”
