As the USS New York sailed majestically towards the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, Class Five from the New York League for Early Learning (NYL) William O’Connor School in Bay Ridge waved small American flags and pointed excitedly to the giant ship.

“It’s not going to fit under the bridge!” exclaimed one tiny spectator of the splendid ship, its hull made from steel from the World Trade Center.

“It’s gonna get stuck!” agreed his classmate.

The Salute to Ships was part of a celebration at Fort Hamilton Army Garrison to kick off 2011 Fleet Week.  Each year, New York City welcomes a fleet of military ships, soldiers and sailors to enjoy the sites and civilian appreciation. The festivities end on Memorial Day with a flyover honoring American military personnel who have lost their lives in service.

The preschoolers from the William O’Connor School, which serves children with special needs, were invited to attend the opening ceremony, along with other school children and residents from the neighborhood.

A highlight for students and teachers alike was presenting Col. Michael J. Gould, Garrison Commander at Fort Hamilton, with a flag they had made in honor of the event.

“We are thrilled to join with so many members of the community to be part of today’s celebration,” said Clare Bonafede, Principal of the school.  “We all had a great time.”
