Karina Castillo has always gone above and beyond at work. That’s why it’s only fitting that she was recently honored at the Restaurant Associates Hospitality Heroes event for her dedication to her job as a runner and cashier.

Castillo, a person YAI supports, is employed by Restaurant Associates at Nomura Securities through a YAI partnership with the Consortium for Customized Employment – a Job Path project dedicated to expanding opportunities for job-seekers with developmental disabilities.

Since June 2022, Castillo has worked to make sure the dining area is ready for customers during the lunch hour. As part of her go-getter personality, she sought to take on more responsibilities and also learned how to work the cash register.

“One of the things that impressed me is how flexible Karina is and how willing she is to jump in and try something new,” said Anna Rybalova, YAI Employee Training Specialist and Castillo’s job coach. “The customers who come for lunch are deeply impressed with her and she makes people’s day.”

Throughout her employment history, Castillo has learned to reinvent herself and look for new avenues for work. Before making the move to food services, Castillo worked in retail for 10 years. She hopes to continue growing in her current position and learn about catering services in the near future.

“I was very proud to receive an award from Restaurant Associates. I really enjoy working there and I am grateful to be recognized for my work,” said Castillo.
