Anna Landre is a disability advocate in England. She is 25 years old and won the Freedom of the City of London Award for her work promoting the rights of disabled people.
Anna, who uses a wheelchair, could not go onto the temporary stage to receive her award with the other winners because the people in charge failed to include a wheelchair ramp.
Anna held back tears as the Lord Mayor had to come off the stage to give her the award on the main floor. She accepted the award quietly from the floor. Why? As Anna later said, because she didn’t want to make a scene, and she didn’t want to be branded as “unreasonable”.
Anna said it was an example of “access roulette that disabled people are forced to face day after day”. She also said,” I suppose I was worthy of being granted the Freedom of the City, but not the freedom of the room.”
The organizers have apologized.
