Through YAI’s Center for Innovation and Engagement, people YAI supports all over New York have been receiving customized technological supports to help increase their independence. For Matthew Seagriff, who lives independently on Long Island, learning how to cook has been a longtime goal. Aside from chicken nuggets, his kitchen skills were very limited.
In conjunction with Matthew’s com hab staff, Person Centered Technology Specialist Sarah Shanderson determined that an Amazon Echo Show would be the perfect piece of technology to help Matthew work toward his goal.
The Amazon Echo Show is a smart hub with a screen. After vetting many similar products, Shanderson determined this is the best one for cooking—a goal many of the people in the Center’s pilot program share. “You can make lists using the Echo. And you can use it with your voice or type in what you want and get instructions,” Shanderson said. “It has very clear recipes.”
At Shanderson’s last check-in with Seagriff, he was cooking Brussels sprouts. He was also proud to share that he’d been watching videos to help work on his knife skills. Get ready for YAI’s next Iron Chef.
