Throughout her career at YAI, Celia Lopez has always embraced new challenges. She has worked part-time, she has been an AM DSP, and she is currently a Health Care Specialist at the Forest Hills residence. She has also provided CPR and SCIP training to other Queens-based staff. When a position for a Level 1 Trainer with YAI Knowledge became available, Lopez was an ideal candidate except for one thing—her fear of public speaking.

“I’ve always been scared of public speaking, so I started reading Network News out loud at team meetings,” Lopez said.

Facing her fear came in handy since part of her interview for the position included preparing a 15-minute presentation. Lopez’s presentation was a success, and she will be joining YAI Knowledge as a Level 1 Trainer on June 1.

“Training is something I’m very interested in,” said Lopez. “One of the things I love about training is that it doesn’t take policy at face value. It tells you the ‘why.’ Why do we do these things?”

Deeply committed to social equity and helping people, Lopez is also working toward a master’s in Human Rights at John Jay College.

Lopez is ready for her new role and has advice for others who want to grow at YAI: “Think beyond your role. Help out in different departments, utilize your network, and just have a posture of compassion.”
